Evacuation

After having reflected on our portrayal of the evacuation, we decided to brainstorm and think of other abstract, impactful ways of representing the things that happened. Having the authentic footage is a very valuable advantage, which is why we decided to use all of it and instead have a voiceover depicting the story of the evacuation through the storytelling of a narrator

Day number 1. 9/12/17
On day number one we had to think about what genre this piece was going to be. We also had to start by writing our individual pitch ideas in order to communicate our visions.
Day number 2. 10/12/17
The second day of our meeting we each presented our presentations in order to voice our initial ideas making it easier for us to expand our ideas. We discussed straight away the feedback and responses that we got in order to better our ideas and tweak them slightly.
Day number 3. 18/12/17
On day number 3 we vaguely plotted out a storyboard and some character ideas. We continued to research historical facts about the Lebanese evacuation and what caused the war.
Day number 4. 20/12/17
Today we have continued to do our individual contributions to the research process. I was finding titles from similar films to copy and Aisha was doing a shot list.
Day number 5. 23/12/17
Today we had decided that we wanted to change the storyboard, this was when we were trying to sort out a shooting schedule and we realised that it would be more impactful if it was more simplistic. So we scrapped all our ideas and started from the beginning. We re-showed each other the individual film pitches which is when we decided that using only authentic footage would be the best idea. We then did a mind map/plan of everything that we thought we would need in order to pull it off.
Day number 6. 24/12/17
In todays progress we went through the authentic footage piecing together the best clips ready for editing. We also tried to do it in black and white to continue the theme of authenticity.
Day number 7. 26/11/17
Having organised all the authentic footage ready to be edited for the final cut, we began researching content-sensitive interviews.
Day number 8. 30/12/17
Today, we looked through all of our shots and footage that we had and we agreed that we had enough, so we started the editing. We also continued to add in any extracts that we had missed out.
Day number 9. 1/01/17
In todays session we continued the editing process and also got together in order to get an overall understanding of how much we had completed.
Day number 10. 3/01/15
Today we researched film titles, posters and general themes.
Day number 11. 4/1/16
Over Christmas, we carried on ensuring that our blog work was detailed and finished. I worked on editing every day to ensure that each time it was worked on, it was with a fresh eye eliminating the occurrence of small mistakes.
Day number 12/ 13/1/16
We then ensured that all of the work and questions made sense and included the correct and appropriate title. We then made sure that all of the labels were correct and fitted the correct pieces of work.

With the airports, ports and main roads closed, sea evacuation was considered the best option. Due to a high volume of evacuees and the priority being getting as many people as possible, only one rucksack full of valuables per person would be permitted aboard.
The first sea evacuation took place on Tuesday when around 180 of the "highest priority" Britons were taken to Limassol in Cyprus on board HMS Gloucester, which was granted a brief "window" to sail through the Israeli blockade around the port of Beirut.
Amongst an estimated 12,000 British nationals and 10,000 dual nationals in Lebanon, 5,000 wanted to evacuate.
Following the journey about a young girl who gets evacuated with her mother and brother from Lebanon to Cyprus on a HMS ship amongst other families. The journey follows her from receiving the news, to having to pack just a small rucksack filled with her belongings before leaving everything behind. Into an exciting but unknown new environment.
The mood board shows the general idea that I am aiming to achieve based on what has influenced me throughout the research process. Firstly my opening scene is based around war life and following an individuals life. I really wanted to emphasise the impact that experiencing a war can have and that it is happening all around the world leaving extreme damaging memories that many people aren't aware of. This is why I plan to have some quite intense shots within the short film shown in the mood board, including several quotes and disturbing pictures surrounding the subject. Secondly I had to focus on setting a formal respectful representation seeing as it is a sensitive subject. This why I wanted to include facts without directly telling the audience, meaning I have drifted away from making it seem wholly like a documentary. Thirdly I had to think of a key idea that would make my film stand out and seem original. To do this I decided to take advantage of my personal experience and use some authentic footage featuring a look into an interview on a news article done shortly after the evacuation.

Initial Ideas and Inspiration
Ivan’s Childhood (1962)
Come and See (1985)
I watched both of these films prior to further development of my own film in order to gain an insight on two different but same genre films. I was able to identify what effects the director had wanted on the reader, which helped me massively dictate which my desired effect would be.
Common themes of black and white and sepia filters to make them seem more authentic and appealing to the audience.
Come and see me is particularly relating to a child, following his journey through the war.
